Goodbye Distant Shores III - Big Tides Sailing Pacific Northwest

Our Southerly 480 sailboat, Distant Shores III, arrives by yacht transport ship in the Pacific Northwest to be received by her new owners. Paul flies to Seattle WA to do the official handover and say goodbye to Distant Shores III. It is Paul's first time sailing in the Pacific Northwest and he learns what a special cruising ground is to be found in Puget Sound and surrounds. There are large tides in this area and Paul explains what uses tides and how to anchor safely in the changing depths.

Offshore Passage to Grenada - Sailing out of the Hurrine Belt

Hurrine Season is quickly approaching in the ribbean and owners of a Southerly 49 need help to get south and away from the danger. Paul flies to St. Martin to help them and they face numerous obstacles on the 3-night offshore passage to Grenada.

Final Cruise on DS3! Sailing San Blas Islands and Epsilon Anchor Test

In this our final cruise aboard our Southerly 480 sailboat, we test out the new Lewmar Epsilon anchor while we revisit the San Blas Islands of Panama, home of the Guna tribes, Panama’s indigenous people who still live in traditional ways. Even though it’s been 11 years since our last cruise here, we reunite with island friends, meet new ones and rediscover these unique pristine islands.

Installing Lithium Batteries

When the AGM batteries fail on our Southerly 480 sailboat following months of lockdown in Panama, we take the opportunity to replace them with lithium batteries before selling the boat. (We're designing a new custom aluminum sailboat.) With crocodiles in the water around the boat at the dock in Shelter Bay Marina, Paul builds a new battery box and friends help lift the new batteries into place. Paul completes the installation and we set sail for a test cruise to the San Blas Islands

Centreboard or Lifting Keel

Ever wondered about the pros and cons of a centreboard versus a vertil lifting keel? In this session of our design feasibility study with KM Yachtbuilders, we do a deep dive into keel options - how they operate, how each affects interior space and the importance of rudder depth. We consider a Bestevaer 53, look at features of a Stadtship 56 including telescoping rudders and study stability curves and polar diagrams.

Hydrogen-Electric power on boats

We're building a new boat and looking into various propulsion systems including the possibility of an electric drive.
We meet the Energy Observer which is travelling around the world demonstrating the possibilities of hydrogen fuel. They are powering all ships systems, including cooking, navigation and even powering the electric motors that drive her through the water with electricity. The electricity is collected in her solar panels which cover every bit of her wide decks. The power is stored in batteries, and also in compressed hydrogen. It's the hydrogen that makes her so interesting.

Building an Aluminum Sailboats - Design Criteria with KM Yachtbuilders Part 1

Continuing with our project to build a custom aluminum boat, we begin a feasibility study with KM Yachtbuilders in the Netherlands by going through a series of key questions with owner, Eeuwe Kooi, to determine our design criteria. Tips for Docking a Sailboat

First in a new series we're producing about docking techniques and boat handling skills.
We all get pretty good at learning to handle our own boats over time, but if we step onto a friend's boat or take the helm on a bareboat charter yacht that we're unfamiliar with, we quickly remember that each boat has its own personality and quirky behaviour.

Aground at the Pub! How to do Tide lculations

Where has the water gone? We visit one of our favourite pubs in Chichester Harbour by bringing the boat in at high tide and walking ashore at low tide for dinner. We describe how to do tide lculations to arrive at a destination at the ideal time of tide for your boat and with the activities you want to do when you get there in mind.
Using footage of drying out our Southerly 49 sailboat so we n walk ashore to the pub as an example, we show you how to lculate the tide height at any time, not just the time and height at high and low tide.
